SUN evening Chicago
You landed.
You're not at a gate.
O'Hare does not just delay the flight. It delays the part after the flight: taxi-in, the penalty box, waiting for a gate that is still occupied. That is the product.

Hour model is typical operations. Live taxi-in appears only with a FlightAware Standard key. FAA NAS is the delay line.
The sit
Taxi-in is the actual product
Airborne delay is a weather story. Taxi-in is an O'Hare story: far runways, full gates, construction, and a field that is too successful for its own pavement.

17.4 min vs 5.1 min
Last 24 months, BTS on-time files. US mean taxi-out is 16.4 min. ORD is not in the same sport.
WGN's July 2026 FAA cut is worse than the 24-month average: taxi-out climbed from 22.5 min in 2018 to 28+ now; taxi-in from 13.6 to 18+. 16% of departures sit more than 40 minutes before takeoff. That is not a feeling. That is the field.
The pad
The penalty box is not a metaphor
It is a holding pad on the FAA airport diagram: east of Concourse C, adjacent to Taxiway B. Arriving aircraft wait there when the gate is still occupied. Most airports have a pad. O'Hare named it, charted it, and then filled it.
What it is
A concrete holding area for airplanes that have landed and have nowhere to park. ADG-IV and smaller. No heavies except the old exceptions. You sit, engines or APU running, while a departure or a late turn vacates your gate.
Why it got worse
Record operations, United and American both adding metal, far-out runways, Concourse D construction through 2028. The FAA capped summer at 2,708 flights a day. The taxi times still led the country.
The worst ones are when I'm coming back from Minneapolis and the flight is 40 minutes and the taxi time is longer than the actual flight was, which happens.
Short hops
Was the taxi longer than the flight?
Regional arrivals get destroyed. The airplane was fast. The field was not.

ORD taxi-in, evening bank

Taxi is 41% of the airborne time. On a MSP–ORD hop, the sit is a real share of the day — not a rounding error.

The grown-up move
Leave the field
The honest CTA is not a lounge pass. It is: do not do this to yourself, or budget it like weather.
Fly Midway
MDW taxi-in averages 5.1 minutes. ORD is 17.4. If the trip fits Southwest / the South Side / the Loop, stop punishing yourself.

MKE plus the Hiawatha is a real Chicago arrival. You trade a taxi-in for a train with a snack car. That is not a downgrade.
Amtrak HiawathaPad the connection
If you must use ORD as a hub, do not book a 45-minute connection. The taxi is the connection. Give it 90.
